Energy Dance Guidelines

Before signing up for this class, please read these guidelines.

Age Requirement
No one under 16 is allowed. Movement (traveling) on the dance floor is constant, occasional collisions occur. Small people can get hurt.

Spectators are not allowed.

Attire
You need to wear a light or bright colored top because we constantly move and weave across the dance floor and the lighting is dim.

Footwear
Do not wear shoes that are worn on the street. Such shoes have small bits of rock in the soles that never come out. Wearing such shoes will wear out the floor much faster. Any dedicated indoor dance shoes are fine. Most people who dance in this "freestyle" type of dance wear half-sole sandals ($17 best price also sold here and here) or dance barefoot. Wearing socks on the dance floor is really too slippery.

Fragrances
Fragrances are allowed and actually encouraged. A multitude of scents increases body awareness and helps turn off the constant mind dialog. A small amount of sandalwood incense is burned. If you are fragrance intolerant, this may not be the dance for you.

Talking
Talking to someone on the dance floor is dangerous because everyone is expecting you to be moving. This makes it hard to get around you and increases the chance of collisions. If you want to have a conversation it is best to stand on the side. If you need to talk on the dance floor, make sure that you are touching the other person. This a smaller and easier target to get around.

Dancing Movement and Physical Condition
In order to drop the constant mental dialog that interferes with mind/body communication, we will perform simple tasks. This allows our bodies to more easily guide our movements. The primary task in Energy Dance is movement across the floor. You need to be traveling most of the time. We have plenty of breaks, but if a person is not in the physical shape to constantly move across the floor for three or four songs, they cannot participate in this type of dance class. Sitting on the side watching for most of the class is not fair to others who could not join the class due to the class size limit.

Class Size Limit
While holing classes in the Old Town Center for the Pro forming Arts, class size is limited to twenty people. As people graduate the beginning class, the advanced class may grow. At that point we will move the advanced class into the Old Town Civic Center.

Keeping a Safe Space
To achieve the goals of this dance, men and women need to be secure enough to be themselves. If an individual is bringing stress into the class, they will receive only one warning. If the situation is not corrected they will be asked to leave in no uncertain terms and without further explanation.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Paul Winter
